Experience Ancient Music as a Living Thing
In the SEIKILO Museum and our expanding lyre ecosystem, we consider the lyre a living instrument, worth teaching and performing with as much, if not more, than any other. To that end, we offer exclusive workshops on the ancient lyre and frame drum for amateur and professional musicians, as well as for anyone wishing to enjoy the lyre experience without the need for previous music knowledge.
Let us know what your musical background is so that we can craft the best possible experience for you!
Workshop #1
The Lyre of Apollo
Learn an Ancient Instrument
Discover the fabled instrument of Apollo and play as the ancients played. Ever wondered how Homer’s or Sappho’s words sounded when accompanied by the lyre? Explore the incredible potential of the lyre, while playing on unique, hand-crafted instruments provided by the master luthiers of the LUTHIEROS family, the most well-known musical instrument brand that focuses on ancient world music.
60 minutes | 1 to 6 participants | 40 € per person
What you will Experience?
Υou will have the chance to hear and play the ancient Greek lyre, a music instrument invented thousands of years ago. How are we going to do that?
First, we will take a closer look at the sound and the aesthetics of a reconstructed ancient Greek lyre, learn about the music system of antiquity and play the lyre on the spot! Then, we are going to learn how to play the “Epitaph of Seikilos”, the oldest complete melody (with lyrics) that survives today! You will soon realize that this ancient musical instrument is much simpler to learn than a guitar or most of the other modern instruments, and this is probably why it was used as a teaching tool for almost every youth who lived in ancient Greece.
A truly one-of-a-kind experience that is offered only by SEIKILO Museum.
What will be Provided?
An ancient Greek lyre will be provided to each of the participants during this experience. These are one-of-a-kind music instruments handcrafted by the world-renowned niche brand LUTHIEROS.
Who can Participate in this Workshop?
There is no need to be a musician or have any kind of former musical education. In case you are a professional musician, this experience can be tailored to your level of knowledge, just let us know in advance.
Workshop #2
The Rhythm
of Ancient Rituals
Learn an Ancient Instrument
From the deepest corners of the desert to the fertile valleys of the Nile and Mesopotamia, the frame drum is considered to be the oldest instrument of the drum family and perhaps the oldest instrument to have ever been invented. In ancient Greece, it was called tympanon, but today you may be more familiar with it as bendir. In this hands-on experience, you will have the chance to learn the basics under the guidance of our virtuoso musicians!
60 minutes | 1 to 6 participants | 40 € per person
What you will Experience?
You will have the chance to hear and play an ancient Greek frame drum, called tympanon, and try to sync with the rhythm of ancient worshipping rituals. How are we going to do that?
First, we will take a closer look at typical Greek rhythms and play them to experience the feeling of participating in a music band. What’s more, we will have the chance to experiment with different percussions and realize that music is for everyone and not only for musicians!
What will be Provided?
An ancient Greek tympanon will be provided to each participant during this experience. These frame drums are handcrafted by the world-renowned niche brand Luthieros.
