Sappho’s Moonlight Song on the Lyre – δέδυκε μὲν ἀ σελάννα | The Moon Has Sunk

The Tenth Muse, Sappho, wrote over 10,000 lines of poetry; only fragments survive. Yet, even in broken form, they shimmer with beauty. In this piece, we encounter one of her most evocative fragments: “The sinking moon has left the sky, The Pleiades have also gone. Midnight comes—and goes, the hours fly And solitary still, I lie.” Written between the late 7th and the early 6th century BCE, this short yet profound poem has inspired generations with its quiet melancholy and timeless intimacy. In this video, Lina Palera performs on a LUTHIEROS Lyre of Olympus, handcrafted in Greece by the LUTHIEROS family. She is joined by Gloria Endres de Oliveira, whose haunting voice breathes new life into both the original Ancient Greek and the English rendition. Let this ancient song carry you into the stillness of the midnight hour.
