The Stoic Apprentice: A Hymn from a Stoic Student on the Ancient Lyre — Thanasis Kleopas

Do not seek for things to happen as you wish, but wish for them to happen as they do, and you will find peace. — Epictetus, Enchiridion This original composition by Thanasis Kleopas, the Wandering Melodist, is inspired by Epictetus’ Enchiridion and performed on a handcrafted LUTHIEROS ancient lyre. It serves not just as music, but as a quiet meditation on Stoic values: inner peace, resilience, and harmony with nature. While the names of great Stoic philosophers — Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius — are well known, this piece is dedicated to those who stood in the shadows: the students. We owe much of Stoicism’s survival to listeners and recorders, such as Arrian, who preserved the teachings of Epictetus. It was through those writings that Marcus Aurelius discovered the path that led him to become the Philosopher-Emperor. Without the students, the masters might have been lost to time. This hymn is for them. For the humble learners who didn’t seek immortality, but made Stoic wisdom immortal.
